Dr. Mahuya Mukhopadhyay is an Assistant Professor of Microbiology at Lady Brabourne College, University of Calcutta. Along with her demanding profession of Teaching and Research, she is an avid traveler and Wildlife photographer. Our first story of hobby on Science and I explores how one can pursue a hobby with a demanding job in STEM. Read on for more details.
How were you introduced into wildlife photography?
The beginning of my journey into the wonderful world of wildlife photography can be traced back to my cherished childhood in the beautiful town of Serampore know for its amazing history, nestled alongside the majestic River Ganga in West Bengal. Fondly remembering those idyllic days spent with my beloved grandmother, who shared my love for nature’s wonders, we would often explore the river’s edge, where enchanting trees adorned the landscape. In those blissful moments, I was captivated by the mesmerising dances of exotic birds, unaware of their names at the time. It was during these precious moments that my grandmother would tell me stories about the elusive ‘Shushuk,’ which later turned out to be the graceful Gangetic dolphins that graced the sacred waters. Despite the absence of extravagant trips and far-flung adventures during my childhood, my love for the natural world flourished, igniting a deep passion within me.
As time passed and life unfolded, I joined as faculty in Microbiology and found myself in Lady Brabourne college in Kolkata. The verdant campus, adorned with lush greenery, became my sanctuary between my professional pursuits. It was there, amidst the vibrant city, that I discovered a haven teeming with birdlife. My eyes lit up with delight as I witnessed birds crafting intricate nests amidst the urban chaos of Kolkata. The diverse array of winged creatures amidst the city’s bustle left me in sheer awe.
With each passing moment, my affinity for nature grew stronger, drawing me towards the untamed wilderness that lay beyond the city limits. The majestic Himalayas called to me, alluring me with their breathtaking beauty and captivating array of creatures inhabiting different altitudes. Fate smiled upon me, presenting an opportunity to own a camera and lens, a gateway through which I could immortalize the exquisite moments unfolding before my eager gaze.
The world revealed itself in a new light through the lens, unveiling its secrets with every click of the shutter. The exhilarating thrill of witnessing nature’s wonders firsthand, frozen in time and captured within the frame, intensified with each journey I undertook. Fuelled by my desire for immersive encounters, I embraced a nomadic existence, traversing diverse lands, dedicating countless hours to the field, absorbing the essence of the wild, and imprinting its grandeur upon the canvas of my soul. With great humility and perhaps a touch of addiction, I confess that I am forever intertwined with the boundless wonders of wildlife photography.
You seem to have a particular interest in bird photography. Any reason for it?
While I have captured various forms of wildlife through my lens, my artistic focus finds solace in the captivating world of avian photography. Birds, with their stunning feathers and graceful presence, represent the epitome of divine artistry. No matter where one travels, the enchanting allure of birds ensures that no corner of the Earth remains untouched by their celestial presence. I am entranced by their sublime beauty, spellbound by the kaleidoscope of colors that adorn their delicate plumage and the melodic symphony that emanates from their beaks. Their allure is so profound that I can stand for hours in the field, unaffected by hunger, captivated by their enchanting activities. Among the many marvels I have witnessed, it is their breeding rituals that stir the depths of my soul. The males, masterful courtiers, employ a multitude of captivating techniques to impress their potential mates. Whether it’s the dazzling transformation of their plumage, the meticulous construction of architectural nests, or the tender act of providing sustenance to their partners, each gesture showcases the intricacies of nature’s design. The exceptional parenting instincts displayed by avian creatures further fuel my fascination, as they exemplify a boundless devotion. In the presence of these exquisite creatures, my heart finds solace, and my passion for the wonders of nature thrives.
Do you choose your travel destination accordingly?
I carefully choose my travel destinations to align perfectly with my love for bird photography. Driven by an insatiable thirst for avian wonders, I meticulously gather information about birds and their captivating activities from various parts of India. These ethereal insights become the foundation for my exciting expeditions. In this age of technological marvels, social media serves as an invaluable tool, effortlessly directing me to the realms of avian intrigue. With a heart always tuned to the symphony of nature, I am ever ready to embark on new adventures, eagerly anticipating the enchantment that awaits me.
How do you manage time between your daily job and your passion of wildlife photography?
The delicate balance between professional obligations, family responsibilities and the allure of untamed beauty presents a formidable challenge. Whenever a brief moment of respite appears on my calendar, I swiftly seize the opportunity, defying the constraints of time and soaring effortlessly towards avian realms. However, my responsibilities extend beyond the realm of work, encompassing the realm of home and family. More often than not, these spontaneous journeys find me venturing forth alone, as few can synchronize their schedules for last-minute adventures. Yet, there is a certain allure in these solitary odysseys, a unique flavor that colors each moment. Freed from the constraints of companionship, I am granted the precious gift of time, unhindered by external agendas. Thus, I can fully immerse myself in the world of my avian subjects, observing their captivating behaviors with undivided attention, enraptured by every flutter and chirp. It is true that solo expeditions come with a greater financial burden, but the immeasurable pleasure derived from these solitary sojourns renders such concerns inconsequential, for the ecstasy I experience amidst nature’s embrace is simply unmatched.
How studying science has influenced you in carrying with your passion, finding time or understanding the techniques of wildlife photography?
The fusion of the scientific realm and my passion for the enchanting world of wildlife has profoundly influenced my journey. As a product of the biological sciences, I have always been captivated by the allure of wildlife. Guided by the whispers of nature’s secrets, I effortlessly unravel the complexities of their behavior, drawing upon my scientific background to understand their whims and preferences. Furthermore, I recognize their profound significance within the intricate web of life—the delicate balance of the food chain, the intricate interplay between predators and prey, and their indispensable role in maintaining the sanctity of ecosystems.
However, time, that elusive companion, always seems to slip through my fingers. Finding moments of respite to pursue my passion proves to be an ongoing challenge, requiring careful prioritization. In the realm of photography, where artistry harmoniously merges with scientific knowledge, a delicate alchemy takes place. Each frame becomes a work of art, meticulously crafted to showcase the splendor of nature. Techniques such as manipulating light, adjusting ISO, shutter speed, and focal length become the foundation of scientific inquiry. And in the realm of post-processing, where minor modifications subtly enhance the representation, my skills and patience are tested to the limits. The alliance between science and the art of wildlife photography has served as a catalyst, propelling me forward, shaping my perspective, and enriching my artistic journey.
Do you want to tell us about one interesting and one not-so-interesting story of wildlife photography?
Within the treasure trove of my wildlife photography escapades, lie tales both captivating and less thrilling. Allow me to unveil these chapters, one by one.
In the serene month of December 2019, my family embarked on a journey to the magnificent Sanjay Dubri National Park. Drawn by rumors of a majestic Tiger named Komli and her trio of playful cubs, we braved a formidable distance of approximately 900 kilometers. Sadly, the initial two safaris, filled with anticipation, brought nothing but disappointment. Undeterred, we embarked on a third venture, the sun bidding farewell to the sky, casting an icy cloak upon the land. With anticipation, our driver assured us that the tigress would grace us with her presence. So, we waited. Other safari vehicles came and went, their pursuits leading them elsewhere in search of the elusive tiger. Then, as if summoned by a celestial command, a wondrous spectacle unfolded before our eyes. Three cubs, full of youthful exuberance, emerged from the bushes, followed by their regal mother. A mesmerizing play ensued, a testament to their fearless spirit. One audacious cub, unfazed by our presence, approached and claimed a seat before our vehicle. Oh, how we marveled at the sight! Bathed in a golden glow, each frame captured the moment in a symphony of clicks. We reveled in the presence of this remarkable family, our cameras immortalizing their existence. After sometime they ventured back into the depths of the forest, leaving us with cherished memories etched in our hearts. Such an unforgettable encounter remains forever cherished in my mind.
Yet, in the realm of wildlife photography, where triumph finds its place, so does the sting of disappointment. This year, amidst the blooming month of May, my quest led me to the enchanting enclave of Latpanchar, nestled near the lush peaks of Darjeeling, West Bengal. With unwavering determination, I sought the presence of a rare avian gem known as the Rufous-necked hornbill—enlisted in the IUCN Red List. The female, nestled within the nest, awaited the arrival of the male, diligently providing nourishment to their fledgling chicks until they were ready to take flight. An arduous trek awaited me, filled with challenges, as I, admittedly, lacked expertise in navigating treacherous terrain. Yet, fueled by passion and burdened by the weight of my camera and lens, exceeding seven kilograms, I embarked on this formidable journey. After an hour of painstaking ascent, a spectacle unfolded before my eyes—a magical nest cradled within the embrace of a mighty tree trunk. Taking my position, anticipation surged within me, awaiting the male’s arrival, a moment that would capture the essence of devotion. Alas, fate, in its fickle nature, frowned upon my endeavors. Torrential rain poured from the heavens, accompanied by thunderous proclamations. The hill, harboring inherent risks, cast shadows of trepidation upon my guide, well aware that landslides and unstable plants posed imminent danger. In a desperate attempt to protect my cherished camera, I sought refuge beneath a canopy of rain, enduring the arduous climb upward. My body, drenched and marked by persistent leeches, grew weary under the weight of disappointment. Alas, despite enduring the trials, the gods of fortune withheld their favor, denying me the opportunity to capture even a single snapshot on the demanding trek. Such is the nature of this artistic pursuit, where the duality of success and failure intertwines, leaving an indelible mark on the path of the passionate photographer.
Thus, my tales unfold, each recounting the intricate dance between triumph and tribulation, forever etched in the annals of my wildlife photography adventures.

Among these distinguished organizations are the Bombay Natural History Society, Sanctuary Asia, Indian Birds, and the DCP School of Wildlife Photography etc. Each of these entities serves as a testament to the shared passion and unwavering dedication to showcasing the magnificent wildlife that calls India home.
How does photography influence you in your career?
The enchanting allure of photography has profoundly influenced my career, leaving an enduring mark on my path, particularly in the field of education. As I have the privilege of sharing knowledge with eager minds, photography becomes a powerful catalyst. When delving into the intricacies of biodiversity, the delicate dance of conservation techniques, and other captivating subjects, the power of imagery rightfully takes center stage. With great passion, I weave my teachings with the images and videos I have captured, creating a visual feast that captivates both my students and myself. Some of these visuals shed light on the plight of endangered species, elevating the classroom experience to a realm of empathy and deeper understanding. Ah, the students, their eyes filled with excitement and wonder, absorb the visuals I present, and together, we embark on a journey of discovery. In this harmonious dance between education and photography, I find solace, fulfillment, and an unwavering drive to continue weaving the visual tapestry of knowledge.
Do you teach about your hobby to budding photographers or are you planning about it?
Although I have not yet entered the realm of professional teaching of photography, my very essence thrives on nurturing the budding photographers and igniting their passion. Within my department, there is a vibrant Nature club, which serves as a conduit for kindling curiosity and guiding students on immersive bird-watching expeditions. Ah, one of my dear friends, filled with delight and perhaps a hint of jest, exclaimed, “You are spoiling your students, my friend!” However, such activities act as powerful catalysts, awakening their spirits and inspiring them to contemplate their own innate passions. I emphasize the vital importance of cultivating at least one hobby, one cherished pursuit, for it is within the realm of creativity that we find the antidote to life’s monotonous and stifling nature. In my own humble way, I strive to plant the seeds of artistic expression and passionate pursuits, forever nurturing a spirit of exploration and enchantment in the hearts of these aspiring photographers.
